Diagnose systemische bacteriële infectie:

<0,5 ng/ml:
Systemische infectie is onwaarschijnlijk. Lokale bacteriële infectie is mogelijk.

0,5-2,0 ng/ml:
Lokale bacteriële of systemische virale infectie is mogelijk. Niet-infectieuze systemische inflammatoire respons is mogelijk. Ernstige sepsis of septische shock is onwaarschijnlijk.

2,0-10,0 ng/ml:
Systemische bacteriële of fungische infectie is waarschijnlijk. Soms niet-specifieke verhoging na belangrijke heelkundige ingreep, ernstig polytrauma, brandwonden.

>10,0 ng/ml:
Ernstige sepsis of septische shock waarschijnlijk.


Differentiële diagnose van lagere luchtweginfectie:

<0,1 ng/ml:
Bacteriële infectie is afwezig. Gebruik van antibiotica is sterk af te raden.

0,1-0.25 ng/ml:
Bacteriële infectie is onwaarschijnlijk. Gebruik van antibiotica is sterk af te raden.

0,25-0,5 ng/ml:
Bacteriële infectie is mogelijk. Opstart van antibiotica wordt geadviseerd.

>0,5 ng/ml:
Bacteriële infectie is waarschijnlijk.
